This morning, along with my colleagues Cllrs James Keeley and Paul Hayes, we visited our old school St Anselms College. It was the school’s enterprise day and we were asked to be judges for each project. The students had to give presentations to ask the “council” for funding for different projects such as a new school, proposed roundabout and sports centre etc. What struck me was the level of work and research that had gone into these projects. It’s good to know the school is maintaining such a high calibre of students! I look forward to going back soon and catching up with my old teachers.
I have been appointed to the Governing Body of Woodchurch High School. Woodchurch High was rated as “Outstanding” by the last Ofsted inspection. I look forward to working with the staff and other governors to maintaining the high standard Woodchurch offers to it’s pupils.
William Hague visits Wirral…and welcomes Lib Dem to the Conservatives

William Hague visited Wirral and was delighted to see that the Conservatives have 3 councillors under the age of 25on Wirral Council. Pictured are myself, Cllr Paul Hayes and Cllr James Keeley chatting to William Hague. William also welcomed senior Lib Dem Rob Earl to the Conservatives who was a former candidate in Upton. Rob is not the first Lib Dem to join the Conservatives, previous we have had former councillor Oliver Adam, Jeff Clarke (Parliamentary Candidate Wirral South) and Sajj Karim MEP. This goes to show that only the Conservatives can beat Labour.
Dear Mr Brown,
I am 94 but I remember a quiet Sunday morning in September 1939 when my family and I listened in silence to an announcement over the radio by Mr. Neville Chamberlain.
It wasn’t a particularly inspiring speech but it sent immediate shock waves through the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
Less than one hour later, I was standing with 20 to 30 other young men outside the local army recruiting office. It was closed, of course, but the Sergeant Major lived over the shop and responded by throwing open an upstairs window, thrusting out his head and roaring “Sod Off! The bleeding war will still be on tomorrow”.
You may well ask what we were doing there in the first instance. The answer is really simple. It was because that is what the people of this country have always done when faced with a threat to our freedom and independence or that of our friends and allies.
There were 7 of us in my group of school friends. Four did not come back; one was in a P.O.W camp for nearly 5 years; one spent 15 days in an open boat adrift in the Atlantic. I had the honour of serving with the RAF for 6 ½ eventful years. Many proud memories – some happy, some not so happy. Were the seven of us, together with thousands upon thousands of other men and women throughout the country, just stupid? Were we sheep? Had we lost the plot? Well now, Mr B, what do you think?
These days, under your stewardship, the people and the media are deeply concerned with teenage stabbings, drug taking, binge drinking, happy slapping. All of this unacceptable behaviour, together with overall violent crime, arises from a loss of authority, of respect and discipline and responsibility. The old formula – stick or carrot no longer works because the stick is subject to so many mandatory restrictions and the biggest problem of all is that we all have Human Rights, including convicted criminals, murderers and terrorists.
Just what is the current role of the police, the judiciary, teachers, parents and yes, what about you Mr P.M and your 600 odd (no pun intended) members of Parliament? You and your slippery predecessor have voluntarily handed over the final decision on so many important issues to the bureaucrats of Brussels that ‘Great’ Britain is destined to be an off-shore region of the United Republic of Europe with less authority than a minor County Council.
The stark truth, Mr Brown, is that you are rapidly making yourself redundant and on another day in a different era you might have found yourself in the Tower facing charges which I scarcely dare to mention.
It is not too late. Give us our Referendum. Whatever the result you would emerge as a man of principle and you might even win the next election.
Yours sincerely,
Mr L B Silvester
Residents of Green Mount have been left with an extra lamppost in their street when the council replaced one and didn’t take the other away! As you can see from the picture it is very dangerous with rubble and slabs piled around. One resident told me that the lamppost was replaced a month ago and so far nothing has been done. I have contacted the council and requested it be removed and remedial work done asap.
Over the past few weeks I have had meetings with the police and Anti Social Behaviour Team. The good news is that serious incidents of ASB are down. Royden Road has been designated a ‘Respect Area’, Upton Village is now an alcohol free zone and the police have been successful in many crack house closures. There are many agencies working together and we are tackling the causes of ASB as well. If you have a problem in your area please get in touch with me.
This morning I had a meeting with Mark Smith, Head of Streetscene and Waste services. It was good to get a proper briefing about the Departments structure and workings. I raised many concerns that have been brought to my attention by residents and someof the issues have already been solved. I will be in touch with everyone who has contacted me in the next few days to let you know what progress we have made.
The council has finally got its act together and cleared the footpath behind Upton Park Drive. Esther McVey and I visited there today to see that our requests over the last 6 months have finally been listened to. We met up with local champion Roy Briggs who was cutting the grass on the footpath which the council doesn’t bother to do anymore. Roy was really pleased that the area has been cleared up ad told us that the days of youths drinking and shouting are over and it is now a more pleasant place to live.
Last night at full Council the wishes of Wirral voters were ignored and the Liberal Democrats decided to prop up the failing Labour led administration. It was only a week ago that the Lib Dem’s said Labour’s position was untenable and pulled out of their cosy pact. What has changed? This confirms that the Lib Dems are opportunistic, untrustworthy and effectively that a vote for them is one for Labour.
Conservatives proposed to do away with grubby back room dealing by proposing a Conservative led administration while giving the Chairmanship’s of the Scrutiny Committees to the opposition parties making the Town Hall more open and transparent. However, sadly this was not to be. Labour and the Lib Dem’s got further into bed with each other and completely ignored the overwhelming voice of almost 40,000 people who voted Conservative.
This is a sad day for democracy on Wirral.
